My only thought is that if she's coming to be a Spade, she'll have to meet Chives here at some point, and possibly be one of the poor saps who starts their career in Spades with him running their lives.

xDD Oh, he runs lives, does he? Maybe he knew her parents when they were in the Deck? Really unpleasant people. Probably a bitch to butler for.

He runs lives like a boss. All the 2-4s who work on the Castle staff for Spades are belong to him. Just how it goes.

And Chives himself is only 24, which means he's only worked properly in the Castle for the last 12 years, so depending on the timing of her parents living on-Deck, he probably either knows them or knows of them from his father's generation (not butlers, but definitely servants).

xDD Well, considering Serena's just arrived and starting at the very bottom, seems like she would have to answer to him. Mind you, she won't like it and will try to get out and climb the ranks as quickly as possible...

Her parents (and the rest of the Sinclaire line, which isn't very long) lived on-Deck until about 24 years ago, actually. They had Serena and then mysteriously disappeared, leaving their daughter to live with her aunt and uncle off-Deck. If Chives had heard of them, it would probably be from his father.
