My headcanon is: conscious decision. As in "well, I could come over here, and get even more fucked up than I am right now...or I can go over here." He had serious PTSD when he stumbled in, you see.

Yeah, his back story is that a car bomb in Lebanon sent the walls in on him and his unit, and he was the only survivor. He found the Deck shortly afterwards and spent the years until Andrew's death determinedly ignoring all of his prior training and painting pretty pictures for the Royals. XD
